🏠 The Truth About Home Break-Ins: Most Thieves Don’t “Break” In — They Walk Right In

Zion Prepper, May 14, 2025

When people imagine a burglary, they often picture a ski-masked thief smashing a window or kicking down a door under the cover of night. But here’s the reality that doesn’t make the movies:

Most burglars don’t “break” in. They just walk in — through unlocked doors and windows.

And here’s the part that stings:

Many homeowners today have video doorbells, alarm systems and even smart locks — but they forget the basics:

  • The alarm system? Not armed.
  • The deadbolt? Unlocked.
  • The garage? Left open while running errands.
  • The motion lights? Turned off to save power.
  • Unlocked Car parked in the driveway with the garage door opener.

Criminals love high-tech houses with low-discipline owners. Technology can help, but it’s not a replacement for consistent, real-world habits. Burglars count on people getting lazy, forgetting the routine, or believing “I live in a good area, it won’t happen to me.”

🔑 The Real Entry Points Burglars Use

Based on data from law enforcement and crime reports, here’s how most home intruders gain access:

  • 34% enter through the front door
  • 23% come in through first-floor windows
  • 22% choose the back door
  • 9% access the home via the garage
  • Only 4% use basement entries

And here’s the kicker:

In nearly 30–40% of all home burglaries, the thief didn’t have to force entry at all. The door or window was simply unlocked.

đź’ˇ Why This Matters

As preppers, we often think about fortifying our homes for big threats — natural disasters, societal collapse, grid failure. But the most immediate threat to your home security might be far more mundane:

A thief cruising your neighborhood looking for an easy score.

They don’t want a fight. They want a quick in-and-out with minimal resistance — and an unlocked door is a green light.

🛡️ Easy Ways to Make Your Home a Hard Target

If a burglar wants in bad enough, they’ll find a way. But most will move on if the target looks like more trouble than it’s worth. Here are your top priority steps:

  • Lock every door and window — always, even when you’re home or just stepping out for a few minutes.
  • Reinforce entry points:
  • Install deadbolts and strike plates with 3” screws.
  • Add security bars to sliding doors or windows.
  • Use visible deterrents:
  • Security cameras or dummy cams
  • Alarm system signs or window decals
  • Exterior lighting: Keep your property well-lit all night with a mix of flood lights, decorative lighting, and landscape lights. While motion-activated lights are common, having consistent, layered lighting can be even more effective by removing the cover of darkness entirely.
  • Secure your garage:
  • Lock interior doors leading to the home
  • Don’t leave garage door openers in your vehicle
  • Don’t advertise you’re away:
  • Pause mail and package deliveries when out of town
  • Use light timers to make your home look lived-in

🧠 Bottom Line

You don’t need a fortress to avoid being targeted — just be harder to access than the next house.
Burglars are opportunists. Don’t give them the opportunity.
